Whenever I see an outfit that I like on Instagram, I immediately screenshot it thinking that I will recreate the outfit the next week. Fast forward a few months, I find that said outfit screenshot again in my camera roll and I realize that it has gone to no use other than taking up my precious photo space. This same situation happened with this screenshot of Bella Hadid's outfit from a night out during fashion week.
Yeah, the rest of her outfit is cool, but the piece that captivated me was the thoughtfully layered crewneck sweatshirt. Stylish sisters think alike because I also noted this cute cropped sweatshirt outfit worn by Gigi.
This now brings me to my fashion trend theory. With a strong revitalization of 80's and 90's trends, denim jackets (whether oversized, cropped, bleached, distressed, etc.) have solidified a permanent spot in casual wardrobes for fashionable women of all ages (my homegirls love them in this post). But will crewneck sweatshirts follow suit?
Not only have these stylish sisters sported this athleisure item, but also one of my favorite Instagram accounts, Treasures of New York, has forecasted the chicness potential of this retro sweatshirt. Featuring a unique supply of vintage crewneck sweatshirts, Treasures of New York carries the retro-luxe versions from the likes of YSL, Gucci, Dior, and Chanel. Simple yet colorful with cheeky embroidered logos, these sweatshirts are as unexpectedly covetable as they are fashionable. If you are looking to purchase one of these sweatshirts, be dedicated to checking their instagram account. They post these items randomly and they sell out fast, never making it on the actual website.
With these sources of inspiration, we thought that we would take this trend on a short test run. Here, Kaity is wearing a reworked thrift store version, sleeves and hem cut, with some Helmut Lang utility pants and platform Tevas. The black contrasts the sweetness of the granny sweatshirt.
My turn! Kaity actually bought this sweatshirt from Treasures of NYC, and I "borrowed" it. I wore it two times, both with the same button up underneath because I loved the color of the collar. To make this sweatshirt more interesting, I like the styling trick of layering a collared shirt or turtleneck underneath. This look is captured quite artfully in a coffee shop bathroom selfie and in film photography shot in my room.
I am calling it now that crewneck sweatshirts will have their shining moment similar to vintage denim. But will it reach the ranks of the versatile denim jacket? Hmm.. maybe not. But it still is really cute and comfy.
