Style Twins: Classic Black

Updated: Jun 4, 2019

Black is one of fashion's most controversial colors. In some cases, it is boring, safe, and expected, while other times it may be chic, fierce, and edgy. Sometimes fashion people love a collection in black, sometimes they hate it. But how do you know when you are doing it right? We can't read minds.

A rule of thumb comes to mind whenever I am looking to dress in black: vary the textures. Wearing a plain black tee? Add some black velvet pants. Maybe you have a black lace top you love. Pair it with a patent mini skirt. If you want to stick to a neutral color palette, combining different fabrics will take an outfit from uninteresting and safe to a little more eye-catching. And this can be applied to any monochromatic outfit. Camel, white, navy, lavender, pink. If you are looking to dress head-to-toe in one color, consider following these guidelines.

Another trick that I have learned: adding a pop of color. A red clutch, an orange lip, a colorful neck scarf, the options are unlimited. This idea is not really new. You have probably read it in so many magazines that it seems way too obvious to even add. But I really think adding one colorful item against a black and white background is a bit cheeky and cute.

In these looks, we stuck to a classic color palette: black, white and red. However, black is the dominating color here. I am wearing some black overalls from Marmalade layered over a dramatic lace top from Who What Wear Collection. Kaity combines an oversized Fila cut tee with some pleated pants. We both accessorized these outfits similarly with on-trend white dad sneakers and red bags from Treasures of New York. Different textures? Check. Pops of color? Double check!

This is a maximalist approach to dressing in black or a simple color palette. I have seen so many girls who can effortlessly pull off a simple look while simultaneously looking undeniably fashionable. However, my styling capabilities do not operate that way. Minimalists, what are your secrets for dressing in black and still looking so cool?? The world needs to know.
