I'm not really into Netflix, but when fashion week arrives, I can't keep my eyes off my phone and laptop. New York Fashion Week has now come and gone, and I am just waiting for the next set of fashion shows to binge watch. As an outsider looking in, here are some trends that I found via my computer screen.
1. Oversized Menswear
Power suits have been in for a while, but this season, designers definitely stepped it up a notch with shoulder pads, slouchiness, belted blazers, and dramatic hats. I prefer the menswear paired with more feminine pieces like long skirts or lace fabrics. Come fall, I want to be sporting a vintage oversized blazer with a bohemian midi dress and combat boots.
2. Turtlenecks
When I was in Paris, I wanted a turtleneck so bad to layer under dresses. When I finally purchased a simple grey turtleneck on one of our frequent trips to Zara, it ripped at the collar the first time I wore it and has haunted me ever since. I think my grudge period is over and I am welcoming turtlenecks with open arms. I'm just wondering if I should take the time to actually repair my grey one or just buy more. Either way, I just plan to layer a turtleneck underneath any outfit whenever I need an extra layer of warmth.
3. Bold Colors
Color for fall? Is that groundbreaking? This season, designers explored their color palette featuring everything from pastel hues to bold color blocking. Whether you're sporting a bright color head to toe or are playing around with different color combos, fall is definitely the time to venture away from neutrals. Color not really you're thing? Consider a black dress with a pop of color like the Marc Jacobs one in the slideshow.
And on that same note...
4. Colored Tights
I'm not trying to brag but I've been on this trend before this even started. My mom always says we are ahead of the curve... well in Idaho at least. My one problem with colored tights is that I can never figure out the right shoes to wear with them. Black just doesn't seem right. Weather permitting, I'd like to see them with a thin metallic sandal. However, I also like coordinating the shoe color with the same tight color for a more elongated leg (see Anna Sui). White may also be a good choice. I'll experiment and get back to you.
5. Prints that make a statement
I'm all for a good print. I'm definitely more of a maximalist than a minimalist, so print mixing is my thing. I especially like this first look from 3.1 Phillip Lim with the peach(I think?) bomber over the polka dot dress.
6. Not-Your-Basic-Black
Are you more of a wall-flower and less into statements? Consider being more creative with black. This season also featured a lot of cool black pieces in a variety of textures. I really want a strong trench in a patent leather like at Marc Jacobs. It would be perfect with just jeans and a tee.
