On a recent trip home, my mom, sister, and I went about our usual Wednesday routine and went hunting at our local thrift store on 50% off day. In the the Northwest the interest in fashion is very limited and more times than not the best thrift store find you'll come across is a pair of Levi's or a denim jacket. However, we still love searching through the thrift store racks for unexpected treasures. Most of the time we're searching for some sort of denim item, wool trousers, funky t-shirts or blazers that are usually on par with some of the street style looks at fashion week. Kaity has always had a different style than my mom and I. Her style is unpredictable, rather spontaneous and can range from wanting to rocking a tracksuit to a fitted lingerie inspired dress. She describes her style as a feeling, most of the time not being able to describe why she likes something but simply saying "I don't know, I get a good feeling when I have it on. I feel like myself." This time, she pulled from the rack an oversize red puffy coat and knew she had to have it. My mom and I both looked at her in a “are you serious?” type of way. We made her try it on and look in the mirror to really decide whether or not it was something she wanted to pull off, but her mind was made up. I mean, I guess it is very Vêtements, non? But is it something that can look good off an eccentric runway? Being the stubborn and opinionated person she is, she bought the coat with pride. Now, it wasn't until about two days ago when my mom texted us in our group message and said, “I think we owe Kaity an apology,” that I truly understand maybe Kaity has something going for her with her "fashion sense through a feeling." Our mom replied again, “I’ve seen so many puffy coats from the NYFW street style and they are kind of fabulous.” So here it is again, the fashion crowd styling clothing that isn’t supposed to be fashionable. Finding style and creativity in something that is not considered to be as such is something that the fashion industry will always have. While a little corny, it is something to be admired. So let’s take a look at these functional beauties sporting a little (or big) puffy jacket and killing the game while doing it.
