Recently I’ve had the sudden desire to binge watch Gossip Girl. Why I didn’t watch it back in high school when every other girl was? I don’t know, why can’t I do anything like everyone else does? But since then I’ve been hooked mainly due to a new source of fashion inspiration (well this isn’t a new thought). However, one thing that really stuck out to me was a blatant use of a questionably useless accessory: Belts. Not the type of belts you use to make the jeans you hate fit better, but the big, bold, maybe sometimes colorful belts that make an outfit look just a little too over accessorized. Not a long time after I started watching Gossip Girl, I began Sex and the City from the beginning. And I found the same thing to be true. I see Samantha belting a short minidress in the same way Serena does. I mean, is it holding up anything? Is it creating a silhouette or cinching the waist? Not really. But does it look intriguing? Does it add personal style? Is it a quintessential accessory the 2000’s? Heck Yes! I remember slinging on a low bedazzled belt when I was 12 and thinking I was trendy af. But the real question is now: Are they back? Well, according to the recent Chanel Haute Couture show, yes, indeed they are! And who is to question the classic taste of the trend defying designs of this legendary house? If Karl wants belts, maybe I do too. I'm not a follower, he just made me realize something that has been forgotten.
